Shades of pink: 77 names, hex codes, and the measurement showing pink is not light red

Every named shade of pink with its hex code, measured in CIELAB and compared pairwise with CIEDE2000. Lighten pure sRGB red and you get coral, then salmon, then peach. You never get pink, because red sits at hue 40 and the pink vocabulary sits at hue 0.

Pink is the one color family everybody thinks they can define in three words. Pink is light red. It turns up in classrooms, in brand guides, in the opening line of most shades-of-pink listicles, and it has the shape of a fact.

It is also a claim you can test directly, which is what makes it worth writing about. Take pure sRGB red, #ff0000. Hold its hue fixed, raise its lightness step by step, and keep the chroma as high as the display gamut allows at each step. If pink is light red, the ramp lands on pink.

Red, then coral, then salmon, then peach. Not one of those is a pink, and the nearest named color to each rung is a red-family or orange-family name every time. Lightening red does not produce pink. It produces the salmon aisle.

I collected 77 named pinks, took every pink, rose and magenta keyword in the CSS named-color set plus the shades that recur across mainstream lists with a settled hex value, and ran all 2,926 pairs through CIEDE2000, the same measurement I ran on the reds, the blues, the greens and the purples. The reason the tint ramp misses is visible the moment you convert the two endpoints.

In CIELAB, pure sRGB red is not at hue zero. It sits at hue 40.0, already a third of the way to orange. The circular mean hue of the 77 named pinks is 359.9. The two vocabularies are 40 degrees apart, and lightening a color does not move its hue. Pink is not light red. Pink is light rose, and rose is a different place on the wheel.

The 77 named pinks, with hex codes

Sorted by CIELAB lightness within three bands. L* is lightness on a 0 to 100 scale, C* is chroma, and the hue figure is degrees from pure red, negative toward magenta and positive toward orange.

Light pinks, L* 78 and above

Twenty names. Mean lightness 85.1, mean chroma 20.3. This is the band people picture when they hear the word.

How much of that list is real

Of the 2,926 pairs, five fall below ΔE 1.0, the point where two colors become genuinely hard to tell apart even side by side, and 19 fall below 2.3. That leaves 99.8 percent of the list as distinguishable colors, so the usual complaint that these lists are padded with the same swatch under different names does not hold up here any more than it did for the purples.

The five that do collide:

  • Pink and bubblegum pink, ΔE 0.27. #ffc0cb against #ffc1cc. These are the same color with a different label.
  • Orchid pink and cameo pink, ΔE 0.69.
  • Fuchsia pink and pink flamingo, ΔE 0.77.
  • Ultra pink and pink flamingo, ΔE 0.80.
  • Baker-Miller pink and flamingo pink, ΔE 0.80. The shade with the institutional reputation is a rounding error away from a Crayola crayon.

Mean separation across the whole set is 18.9 ΔE. The widest gap is medium violet red against champagne pink at 47.3, which is a fair summary of how much ground the word pink is being asked to cover.

Why the tint ramp misses

The hue coordinate is doing all the work, and it is worth seeing exactly where sRGB puts things. Walk the fully saturated boundary of the gamut and convert each step to CIELAB:

  • rgb(255, 0, 170): Lab hue 347.9.
  • rgb(255, 0, 128): Lab hue 3.0.
  • rgb(255, 0, 85): Lab hue 19.3.
  • rgb(255, 0, 0): Lab hue 40.0.
  • rgb(255, 85, 0): Lab hue 48.4.

Pure red is 40 degrees round from where the pink names live, and it is only 8 degrees from a color that is visibly orange. The RGB primary called red is not perceptually central to red at all. It is a red-orange, which is why the reds in that family have a circular mean hue of 28.5 and lean toward rust, vermilion and flame.

Run the same lightness ramp from hue 358 instead, which is where the pink vocabulary actually sits, and the result behaves:

  • L* 55: #fe008c
  • L* 65: #ff69a4
  • L* 75: #ff9bbd
  • L* 85: #ffc5d7

That is the pink ramp. #ff69a4 is a hair from French pink, #ffc5d7 is a hair from the CSS keyword. Same operation, same lightness targets, one hue apart, and the two ramps end up in different aisles of the paint shop.

The everyday version of the mistake is even easier to see. Mixing #ff0000 with white in sRGB, which is what most people mean by tinting, gives #ff8080 and then #ffbfbf. Those sit at hue 25.3 and 21.4. Nearest named matches: coral pink and baby pink. Baby pink is on the list, which is the concession the folk definition earns. It is also the palest, least saturated corner of the family, where every hue starts to look alike.

So is the folk claim ever right

Partly, and the honest version is more interesting than a flat no. If you ask which single measurement best separates the pink vocabulary from the red one, the answer depends on how you draw the lists.

Across the full 77 pinks and 65 reds, hue is the better discriminator: a threshold at hue 23 sorts 84.5 percent of the 142 names correctly, while the best lightness threshold, at L* 53.5, manages 77.5 percent. Chroma is worst at 63.4 percent.

Restrict both sides to unambiguous cases, names actually containing the word pink against the core red terms like crimson, scarlet, maroon and carmine, and it flips. Lightness now sorts 92.2 percent correctly against hue's 88.3 percent. The core pinks average L* 72.2, the core reds L* 41.2.

So lightness really is the axis that separates the words when the words are used carefully. What it does not do is generate pink from red. You can sort the two families by brightness after the fact and still be unable to reach one from the other by turning a brightness dial, because the hue gap was there before you started.

Fifteen names both families claim

Compiling the reds list and the pinks list independently, from the same kind of mainstream sources, produced 15 names that appear on both with identical hex values:

Nineteen percent of the pink list is also on the red list. Two of them are the CSS keywords pink and hot pink, which is about as central to the category as a name can get. The boundary is not disputed at the edges, it is disputed in the middle.

The overlap in raw numbers is larger still. Forty-three of the 65 reds and 76 of the 77 pinks fall inside the same lightness band, L* 42.7 to 92.7. A reader who assumes the two families occupy separate brightness ranges is picturing something the data does not contain.

Pink is not a color of the spectrum

There is no wavelength of light that looks pink. Point a spectrometer at every rainbow in history and you will find red at roughly 700 nanometres, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet at 400, and nothing anywhere on that line that a person would call pink.

Pink happens when the long-wave cones fire strongly and the short-wave cones fire meaningfully at the same time, with the middle ones held partly back, and no single wavelength does that. In the CIE chromaticity diagram the spectral colors trace a horseshoe, and the two loose ends get joined by a straight line, the line of purples, which is drawn rather than measured. The vivid end of the pink family lives on and just inside that line. Magenta at #ff00ff is the purest example, and it is a mixture by necessity.

This is the same structural point that makes purple unusual and black awkward, arriving from a third direction. Where it differs from purple is in the consequences. Purple pays for having no wavelength with a hard brightness ceiling. Pink does not.

Pink has more headroom than red, and the names ignore it

Take the highest chroma sRGB can reach at each lightness and compare a pink hue against a red one:

  • L* 50: red hue 0 reaches C* 79.0, pink hue 330 reaches 97.4.
  • L* 60: red 73.1, pink 110.8.
  • L* 70: red 51.0, pink 77.8.
  • L* 80: red 31.7, pink 48.7.

Hue 330 peaks at C* 110.8, roughly 30 percent more saturated than anything available at hue 0, and it peaks at a higher lightness, L* 60 against L* 55. On a screen, pink is strictly the stronger color. Anyone who thinks of it as red's diluted relative has the gamut backwards.

The vocabulary does not use that headroom. Mean chroma across the 77 pinks is 49.5, against 61.5 for the reds. Expressed as a fraction of what was reachable, each named pink averages 84.5 percent of the maximum chroma available at its own lightness and hue, and the reds average 86.5 percent, so the two families are about equally ambitious per name. The difference is where the names sit. Pink names cluster at high lightness, and at high lightness the gamut narrows sharply for everyone.

That is the real constraint on the pale end. At hue 340, the maximum chroma available is 89.5 at L* 60, 63.1 at L* 70, 39.6 at L* 80 and just 18.7 at L* 90. Lavender blush at C* 5.9 and misty rose at C* 10.0 are not timid choices, they are sitting exactly on the gamut boundary. Six of the light pinks use 100 percent of the chroma physically available to them. Within the pink family, lightness and chroma correlate at minus 0.75. For the reds, which are spread across the whole lightness range, the correlation is minus 0.09.

There are real exceptions, and they are the greyed shades rather than the pale ones. Mountbatten pink uses 17 percent of its available chroma, dusty rose 28 percent, rosy brown 29 percent, old rose 37 percent. Those are deliberately muted colors, and three of the four were named for camouflage, textiles or furniture rather than for looking pink.

Where pink stops and purple starts

Nine of the 77 sit at hue minus 20 or beyond, heading for magenta and then purple: pink flamingo at minus 33.0, fuchsia pink at minus 32.8, ultra pink at minus 32.7, steel pink at minus 32.1, magenta at minus 31.8, pink lace at minus 23.8, hot magenta at minus 21.9, Mountbatten pink at minus 20.4 and sky magenta at minus 20.3.

Nothing on the pink list goes past minus 33, and the purple vocabulary starts in earnest around minus 40. There is a genuine gap between the two families in the low 30s, which is unusual. Pink and red bleed into each other constantly, as the 15 shared names show, but pink and purple keep a polite distance. The names that do cross the line stop calling themselves pink and start calling themselves magenta, orchid or mauve.

The other end is messier. Twelve pinks sit at hue 20 or higher, which is past pure red and into orange: champagne pink at 63.8, millennial pink at 39.2, salmon at 32.8, coral pink at 30.6, misty rose at 28.9. If you are picking a pink for a design and it looks warm and slightly wrong next to your other pinks, check its hue before you blame the monitor. Anything above about 20 is a peach with a pink name.

The one pink with a research file

Baker-Miller pink, #ff91af, is the only shade on this list that has been the subject of published experiments, and the story is a useful lesson in how a color claim ages.

In 1979 Alexander Schauss persuaded Gene Baker and Ron Miller, who ran a naval correctional facility in Seattle, to paint two holding cells this shade. The reported result was dramatic: fifteen minutes of exposure eliminated aggressive behaviour during intake, with zero incidents over the following 156 days. The finding travelled fast. By the early 1980s more than 1,500 hospitals and correctional institutions in the United States had painted at least one room in it, and the shade picked up the nickname drunk tank pink.

Then came the replications, and they did not go well. A controlled study by Gilliam and Unruh found no reduction in heart rate or grip strength. Later attempts to reproduce the original effect under standardised conditions failed to support it. What survives is a widely repeated anecdote resting on an uncontrolled study of two cells, adopted at scale before anyone checked.

Worth noting alongside the measurement above: Baker-Miller pink sits 0.80 ΔE from flamingo pink, a Crayola color with no claimed psychological properties whatsoever. Whatever the cells were doing, they were not doing it with a color anybody could reliably pick out of a lineup.

Why English bothered to name light red at all

There is a linguistic oddity hiding in the folk definition. English gives light red its own basic word, which is not a courtesy it extends to light blue or light green. There is no single English word for light blue in the way pink is a word. You say light blue.

Russian does the opposite. It splits blue into two basic terms, goluboy for light blue and siniy for dark blue, and several researchers argue these function as genuinely separate basic color terms rather than modifiers, which would give Russian twelve basic terms instead of the eleven Berlin and Kay proposed. The split has measurable consequences: Russian speakers discriminate two blues faster when the pair straddles the goluboy and siniy boundary than when both fall on the same side.

So the reason English has a word for pink is not that pink is perceptually special in a way light blue is not. It is that different languages carve the space differently, and English happens to have cut here. The measurement in this article suggests the cut is not even in the place the folk definition claims. English named a hue region, rose, and then explained it to itself as a brightness variant of the neighbouring one.

Training your eye on the pink band

Pink is a genuinely hard family to judge by eye, and the numbers explain why. Most named pinks sit above L* 70, where the sRGB gamut is narrow and every hue is compressed into a small chroma range. Two pinks 20 degrees apart in hue at L* 85 differ by far less than the same pair would at L* 55. It is the band where your eye has the least to work with.

The main color memory game shows a target, takes it away and asks you to reproduce it, which is where you find out how much of a pale pink you were actually encoding. Name That Color is the sharper test for this family specifically, because it forces the boundary decisions this article is about. Deciding whether #ff91af is pink or salmon, or whether #ffe4e1 is a pink or a peach, is exactly the judgement the 15 shared names show people disagree on. What to take away

  • Pink is not light red in any operational sense. Lightening #ff0000 gives coral, salmon and peach, because sRGB red sits at hue 40 and the pink vocabulary sits at hue 0.
  • Pink is light rose. If you want a pink, start from #ff007f and raise the lightness, not from #ff0000.
  • On a screen pink is the more saturated family, not the weaker one. Hue 330 reaches C* 110.8 against red's 85.0.
  • The pale pinks look washed out because the gamut runs out at high lightness, not because the names are timid. Six of them use every scrap of chroma available.
  • Fifteen names, including the CSS keywords pink and hot pink, are claimed by both the pink and the red vocabulary. Quote hex codes.
  • Baker-Miller pink's calming reputation rests on an uncontrolled 1979 study that later work failed to replicate.
