The internet’s longest game of color telephone. Look at the last player’s color for three seconds, repaint it from memory, and you’re a link in the chain forever.
What is The Color Chain?
The Color Chain is the classic telephone game — also known as broken telephone or Chinese whispers — played with color instead of words, by everyone on the internet at once. There is exactly one chain. It started as a single yellow swatch, and every player since has extended it by one link: look at the previous player’s color for three seconds, then rebuild it from memory with hue, saturation and brightness sliders. Whatever you submit is what the next player has to memorize.
Nobody ruins the chain and nobody saves it — every link nudges the color somewhere new, and the ribbon above shows the whole journey. Your link is permanent, numbered, and carries your name. One link per player per day, so come back tomorrow and see what the world did to your color overnight.
How to play
- 1Take your three-second look
The current head of the chain fills your screen briefly — no pausing, no screenshots worth taking. This is a color memory game, so all you get to keep is the memory.
- 2Repaint it from memory
Dial the color back in with the same HSV sliders as the classic game. Precision matters: your accuracy score is how much of the color survived your memory.
- 3Become a link forever
Your color joins the chain with your name and link number on it, and the next player memorizes your color. Share your link number — the chain remembers everyone.
The telephone game, but measurable
In the playground telephone game a whispered sentence mutates as it passes down the line, and the fun is hearing how far it drifted. Color makes that drift measurable. Each handoff is scored with a perceptual color-difference formula (CIEDE2000), and the chain keeps a running total of how far it has traveled from the original yellow. Ten sharp-eyed players in a row barely move it; one glance-and-guess can send it somewhere entirely new. That tension — everyone trying to be a strong link, the chain drifting anyway — is the whole game.
