The quick answer, the one most people came here for: you make brown by mixing the three primary colors together, or by mixing any two colors that sit opposite each other on the color wheel. Red and yellow and blue in roughly equal parts land on a muddy brown. So do blue and orange, or red and green, or yellow and purple. If you already have orange, the fastest route of all is to take that orange and darken it with a touch of its opposite or a little black.
That is enough to get you painting. But if you stop there you will spend the rest of your life guessing, adding a bit of this and a bit of that until the puddle looks about right. The reason so many brown recipes float around, all slightly disagreeing, is that people are describing the same thing from different angles without saying what brown actually is. Once you know that, you can mix any brown you want on purpose, and you understand why brown is the one color you will never find in a rainbow.
The one-line answer, three ways
Every reliable brown recipe is really the same move: cover the whole color wheel with your mix, then keep it dark. Here are the three that painters actually reach for.
- All three primaries. Red plus yellow plus blue. Start heavier on red and yellow, add blue a little at a time. Blue is the one that turns a bright mix muddy, so it controls how deep the brown goes.
- Two complements. Any complementary pair works, because between them a pair already spans the wheel: blue and orange, red and green, yellow and purple. This is the cleanest route, and I explain why in the piece on complementary colors.
- Orange, knocked down. Mix or grab an orange, then mute and darken it with a small amount of blue or black. This is the honest one, because it admits what the other two are quietly doing: they are all building an orange and then dimming it.
Why brown is really dark orange
Here is the part almost no mixing guide tells you, and it is the whole trick. Brown is not a hue of its own. It is orange at low brightness, seen next to something lighter. There is no wavelength of light that is brown. Shine a single pure color at a wall in a dark room and you can produce red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, but never brown. Brown only appears when a dim orange sits in a scene that also contains brighter light for your eye to compare it against.
You can prove this to yourself with a screen. Brown is what a computer calls a low-value orange: same hue family, lower brightness. Take a vivid orange like #FF8000 and drop its brightness and you slide straight into brown, no new color added. This is also why brown feels so tied to its surroundings. It is a relative color, the way it looks depends on what is around it, which is the same effect that makes the middle stripe of a photo look one color indoors and another outdoors. Recipe one: the three primaries
Start with red and yellow. Together they give you orange, which is your base for every brown. Now add blue, the complement of orange, a little at a time. Blue pulls the orange down toward neutral, and because you cannot mix a perfectly even grey out of imperfect paints, the neutral it lands on is a warm dark, which is brown.
The ratio is roughly two parts red, one part yellow, one part blue, but do not trust ratios more than your eyes. The mix is sensitive: a touch too much blue and your warm brown turns cold and greyish, a touch too much red and it warms into a brick or rust. Add blue in small dabs and stop the moment the orange goes muddy. That muddy moment is brown.
Recipe two: two complements (the painter’s route)
If you want control rather than a lucky puddle, mix a complementary pair, because you get to choose the temperature of the brown by which side you lean on. Every one of these is a genuine brown, they just lean warm or cool:
- Blue and orange is the most predictable pair. Heavier on orange gives a warm, tan-leaning brown. Heavier on blue gives a cool, coffee-ground brown.
- Red and green makes a deep, slightly dull brown that leans toward maroon as you add red. It is the pair most likely to go murky, so add the green sparingly.
- Yellow and purple gives softer, olive-tinged browns, the kind you want for skin tones, dead leaves and old wood.
The reason this works is not a paint accident. A complementary pair, by definition, sits on opposite sides of the wheel, so together they already contain a bit of everything. Mixed fully they cancel toward neutral, and because pigment mixing is subtractive, that neutral comes out dark rather than light. Dark neutral with a warm bias is exactly what brown is. This is the same reason I trust complements over the three-primary route: with two paints you have one variable to nudge, not three fighting each other.
Making it lighter: tan, beige and light brown
Once you have a brown, going lighter is easy and going darker is easy. Lighter is where most people overthink it. To lift a brown toward tan or beige you have two moves, and they do different jobs:
- Add white to raise the brightness. This gives you beige and taupe, the soft, slightly grey light browns. White also cools and dulls a color, so a white-lifted brown reads calm and chalky.
- Add yellow to lift while keeping it warm and lively. Yellow-lifted browns are your tans, sand and caramel, the ones that still look sunlit rather than washed out.
Most convincing light browns use a bit of both: yellow to hold the warmth, a little white to raise the brightness the rest of the way. If a tan looks lifeless, you probably reached for white when you wanted yellow.
Making it darker: chocolate and near-black brown
To deepen a brown, resist the urge to just pour in black. Black works, but it also flattens and greys the mix, and too much of it kills the orange underneath so you lose the warmth that made it brown in the first place. The better moves:
- Add more of the cool complement. If your brown came from orange and blue, a touch more blue darkens it while keeping it a true color. This is how you get a rich chocolate rather than a dead one.
- Add a deep blue or purple instead of black. Dark browns built with blue read as browns in shadow. Dark browns built with black read as brown with the life drained out. Your eye can tell even when it cannot say why.
Warm, cool, and the red-brown called maroon
Brown has a temperature, and naming it is what lets you match the exact one you want. Lean the mix toward red and yellow and you get warm browns: chestnut, russet, terracotta. Lean it toward blue and green and you get cool browns: umber, taupe, the grey-brown of driftwood.
Push a brown hard toward red and you arrive at maroon, which is really a dark, brownish red rather than a brown proper. Mix it the same way you would a red-leaning brown: red as the base, a small amount of its green complement or a little black to deepen it, and stop while it still reads red rather than mud. A whisper of blue in there gives the more purple, wine-like maroon.
A hex reference for the common browns
If you are working on a screen rather than a palette, you are not mixing pigment at all, you are dialing brightness and hue directly. Here are the browns people ask for most, with the hex you can paste straight in. Notice how the whole family shares an orange hue and just walks down in brightness:
Every one of those is an orange with the green and blue channels pulled down by different amounts. That is the same fact as before, wearing numbers instead of paint.
Paint and screens disagree, and that is fine
One thing worth saying plainly, because it trips people up: mixing brown from light is a different job from mixing it from paint. On a screen, colors add together toward white, so red light plus green light makes yellow, not brown. Brown on a screen is not something you mix by combining beams, it is a dim orange the display produces directly. In a paint tray, colors subtract toward black, so the same two pigments make a muddy dark. Train the mix by eye
Reading recipes only gets you so far. The skill that actually matters is looking at a brown out in the world and knowing, roughly, how to get there: how orange it is underneath, how dark, how warm. That is a trainable sense, and the fastest way I know to build it is to mix toward a target and get scored on how close you land.
